Classic Apple Pie |
Apple pie is a beloved dessert featuring a flaky, buttery crust and a warm, spiced apple filling. This homemade recipe will guide you to bake a pie that’s perfect for any gathering or holiday meal. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a truly comforting treat!
Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
For the Apple Filling:
- 6-8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp sugar (for topping)
Instructions:
- Make the Crust: In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Add cold butter and mix with a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Divide in half, shape each half into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss until apples are evenly coated.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Assemble the Pie: Roll out one dough disk on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Place it in the dish and fill with the apple mixture. Dot with small pieces of butter.
- Roll out the second dough disk and cover the pie. Trim excess dough, crimp the edges to seal, and cut small slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
- Brush the top crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake: Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.
- Let the pie cool for at least 1 hour before serving.
Tips for Serving and Garnishing:
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. For a more rustic look, dust the top crust lightly with powdered sugar before serving.
Reheating Instructions:
To reheat, place slices in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes or microwave individual portions on medium power for 1-2 minutes.
